Lamproom Exhibition
Below is a transcript of the narration you can hear
when you visit the lamproom at the South Wales Miners' Museum:

The lamps on display have been kindly donated from
all parts of the country. These lamps were used by the miners underground.
The lamproom had three purposes; one to check who and how many men went
underground at the beginning of a shift, two to charge the lamps and
thirdly to ensure the flame lamps were filled with oil and working correctly.
When
the workman entered the lamproom he had a personal check number, the
circular disks which are on display, would be placed in a box before
he collected his lamp this would ensure a record of who was underground.
He would then proceed to collect his lamp and self rescuer.
If there was a fire, the miner placed the self rescuer
over his nose and mouth this enabled him to get to clean air, it allowed
approximately fifty minutes walking time.
When the miner completed his shift he would replace
his lamp for charging collect the disk which had now been placed by
his lamp.
All the flame lamps, or better known as safety lamps,
used underground are on display in the museum.
